Fun Facts
There are 8 intact lighthouses present on the islands, all of them over a hundred years old. The oldest was built in 1856.
In the past the islands were inhabited by Native Americans, pioneer farmers, commercial fishermen, lighthouse keepers and their families.
Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was established in 1970 with 20 islands; the 21st island was added in 1986.
