Fun Facts

Mystic Aquarium is one of two aquariums in the U.S. and the only aquarium on the east coast where you can see Steller sea lions, the largest sea lion species in the world, with adult males reaching upwards of 2,400 pounds.

They may be tiny, but African penguins poop a lot. On average, a single penguin will poop anywhere between 6 to 8 times an hour – that’s nearly 200 times a day – which is why you’ll often see our penguin trainers toting white stains on their clothes. (Don’t worry, it washes out…most of the time).

Water quality is a vital component to the world-class animal care at Mystic Aquarium. In fact, there’s a team dedicated to testing every habitat on campus. On average, they conduct 150 to 250 tests per week, analyzing all fish habitats once a week and the marine mammal and bird habitats twice daily.
