Pig's Eye Regional Park is located along the Mississippi River in a section of the river where ecology, landscape, history, culture, and institutions combine in a complex and exciting way. The former landfill was remediated and turned into a park featuring a 500-acre lake, hiking trails, and bird watching areas.
Pig's Eye Scientific and Natural Area contains a large heron rookery and is closed during bird nesting season (April 1 - July 5). This rookery is the Upper Midwest's largest and most diverse colonial nesting site. Species that are found nesting in this rookery include great blue heron, great egret, black-crowned night-heron, and double-crested cormorants. This is one of four places in the state where the yellow-crowned night-herons are known the rest.
