Explore Ottawa's most unique historic site, Diefenbunker Museum, the only bunker in Canada that is open to the public.

The Diefenbunker is a massive four-story, 100,000 square foot underground facility built during the Cold War to protect key government and military officials in the event of a nuclear attack. It was an operational military base until it closed its doors in 1994. In 1998, the bunker reopened as the Diefenbunker Museum and was designated as a National Historic Site. It is a symbol of Canadians' will to survive.

Today, come and explore the underground through regular tours of the museum and attend award-winning events, programs, and activities for all ages. While at the Diefenbunker, brave the world's largest escape room, Escape the Diefenbunker.

Wear comfortable shoes. Baby carriers are recommended instead of strollers, as there is no elevator use for strollers.

Diefenbunker is closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year's Day. Admission is free on Canada Day.

It takes at least one hour to experience the Bunker.

Fun Facts

More steel was used to build the Bunker than was used to build the Eiffel Tower.

The Bunker was one of the locations used for the 2002 movie, "The Sum of All Fears", featuring Ben Affleck and Morgan Freeman.

Toilets inside the Bunker are bomb-proof.
