James Joyce's novella, "The Dead," describes a holiday gathering on January 6, 1904, in the Dublin home of two elderly sisters, Kate and Julia Morkan, and their niece, Mary Jane. At the party are students, friends, a celebrated tenor, a lost alcoholic, and a couple, Gabriel and Gretta Conroy. When the evening is over, Gabriel learns something about his wife that changes his sense of who she is and who they are to each other, of what it actually means to be alive, and to be dead.

    Two by Friel
Two by Friel juxtaposes two short plays by Irish master Brian Friel: Lovers: Winners (1967) and The Yalta Game (2001). Each piece centers on a couple in the blossoming stage of romance; they build worlds of imagination, possibility, and hope--pushing away the encroaching realities that threaten to extinguish their love. The evening will explore the nature of love, the power of the imagination, the stories we believe, and those we brush aside.
