The Delicate Art of Glass Blowing: Six Cape Cod Studios & a Museum to Visit
Cape History
While the Cape is known for many things, the arts community is definitely a big part of the area, from sculptors to painters and many other mediums. Continuing in the artistic tradition inherent to the area are the glass blowers of Cape Cod.
There is Pairpoint Glassworks at 851 Sandwich Road in Sagamore (508-888-2344) which prides themselves on being America's Oldest Glassworks, having been around since 1837.
From the town of Sandwich (famous for their glass), comes Michael Magyar who has pieces for purchase and on exhibition in his studio located at 470 Route 6A in East Sandwich, phone number 508-888-6681. Magyar also allows families to watch him blow glass, and--if you are lucky--he may let you give it a shot!
Also located in Sandwich is the renowned Sandwich Glass Museum. The Sandwich Glass Museum has various events and exhibits throughout the year, so click the link above and check out their website to see what is happening during your visit to the Cape. The Sandwich Glass Musuem also has glass blowing demos (see their website for times, or call them at 508-888-0251). The museum is located at 129 Main Street in Sandwich.
McDermott Glass Studio, located at 272 Cotuit Road in Sandwich (508-477-0705). This shop features the work of 4 different glass blowers (David McDermott, Yukimi Matsumoto, Bryan Randa, and Isabel Green), so you can almost assuredly find a piece to fit your style, from stemware to vases and more. McDermott also designed the chandelier installation at the Cape Codder Resort in Hyannis.
Fritz Glass of Dennisport is celebrating their 24th year of operation in 2015. This family-owned business features the work of glass blower Fritz Lauenstein, one of "America's premier glass artists". Fritz Glass has the opportunity to watch the glass blowing first hand, as their work shop is on the same floor as the retail area. Fritz is located at 36 Upper County Road in Dennisport and their phone number is 508-394-0441.
Morrison Glass, located at 584 Main Street in Hyannis (508-790-7990), makes fresh glass daily and not only has many gorgeous pieces for sale, but they also offer classes for those who aspire to learn the craft.
For an art display, the Millstone Sculpture Gallery at 3090 Main Street in Brewster (508-896-2452), is dedicated to the work of Benton Jones who works in the mediums of glass and metal.
