Fun Facts

Harlem was annexed to New York City in 1873 as the city's first suburb, explaining why the neighborhood has more brownstones than any other neighborhood in Manhattan.

In Harlem in the late 1950s, the African Jazz Arts Society (AJASS) and its Grandassa Models introduced the cultural movement that led to the natural hairstyles and wearing of African-influenced clothing like dashikis.

The name Harlem has been included in the titles of at least thirty-five books, seventy-four songs, and twenty-six movies. No other neighborhood in America can match this recognition.
