The Provincetown Community Compact offers stays in two historic dune shacks, Fowler and C-Scape, through an agreement with the Cape Cod National Seashore. Since last year, one application form is online for both shacks.
Stays in the shacks are open to all, while certain weeks are set aside for selected artists, writers and organizations. The Compact offers a $500 fellowship to one artist in residence and can partially subsidize weeks for three jury-selected visual artists. Also, two writer’s weeks are funded. Annually, they also provide fully funded weeks for clients of the AIDS Support Group of Cape Cod and Helping Our Women – funded by the annual Swim for Life & Paddler Flotilla – a benefit for AIDS, women’s health & the community. The Compact also offers subsidized weeks for writing fellows of the Fine Arts Work Center.
For the first time, The Compact is asking for an application fee of $10 due to the overwhelming number of people who have applied with the easier online application. All applicants must register online.
Dune Shack Spirit. For those who wish to support the organization and help ensure the affordability of the program for all, a $1,250 donation will reserve a one-week residency (guaranteed, $850 tax-ductible donation). Please contact us for details. To make a tax-deductible donation, please send to: The Compact, P.O. Box 819, Provincetown, MA 02657, or through PayPal. Applications are due January 15, 2017./
C-Scape Friends. $25 donation provides entry into a lottery for three weeks set aside for Friends at a reduced rate ($200-400 sliding scale) . This allows six chances to be drawn in the lottery.
Community Residencies. Community Residencies are open to all and are selected through a lottery system. You may select up to three weeks in each shack.
Artist in Residence Applications. Visual artists applying for the three, three-week, juried summer residencies (one with a $500 fellowship) will need to apply to both the general application and to a special online application and provide: a resume, 3-5 images, and a statement about how living and working in the dunes will enhance your work. The Park Service conducts once weekly walking tours to the shack. These interpretive programs expose visitors to the experiences of the artist and the artist’s work.
Writers Residencies. We offer two weeks funded by The Compact for writers of all genres. This is a non-juried process; writers will be selected by lottery, thus allowing writers of all levels the same opportunity. Please fill out the online application and email to us (thecompact@comcast.net) a 1-2 page artist statement or resume, and 3-5 pages of your writing for our records.
Applications are due January 15. Selected Spring residents will be notified by March 15. Summer and Fall residents will be notified by May 1.
Due to the high volume of applications, the Compact only notifies those who are selected.
