The Stanley Hotel

333 E Wonderview Ave · Estes Park, CO

Why you should go…

F.O. Stanley, co-founder of the Stanley Motor Carriage Company, opened this Colonial Revival hotel in 1909 near Rocky Mountain National Park. Stephen King's 1974 night here inspired The Shining, and a 60-minute tour compares the novel, the Kubrick film and the 1997 miniseries filmed on site. Other guided tours cover the hotel's history and its ghost stories after dark. Out front is a hedge maze built in 2015 as a nod to the Kubrick film.

General stay guidance

Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.

  • Rates swing with the calendar

Midweek nights and shoulder-season dates are usually the kindest on price.

  • Read what is included

Parking, resort fees, and breakfast are the three extras that most often land on the final bill.

  • Ask at booking, not at the desk

Early check-in, late checkout, and room preferences go further when you request them in advance.

  • On a short trip, location wins

What you can reach on foot from the door matters more than the amenities list.
