Virginia's York River State Park protects a delicate estuary where fresh and salt water mingle, supporting marine life and plants. Part of the Chesapeake Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve, the park holds fossil beds and Colonial and Native American artifacts. Visitors can explore more than 40 miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horse trails, fish from a pier or shoreline, launch boats, and join ranger-led canoe and kayak trips. A visitor center, gift shop, picnic shelters, and playgrounds round out the offerings. The park is day-use only, with no overnight lodging.
