About Yorktown National Cemetery

Yorktown National Cemetery sits within the Yorktown Battlefield unit of Colonial National Historical Park in Virginia. Officials chose the spot in 1866 because it lay near several Civil War battlefields tied to the 1862 Peninsular Campaign. The grounds also sit beside the place where British forces surrendered to General Washington in 1781. Most people interred here were Union soldiers, though some Confederate soldiers and a few wives are also identified. Remains were moved to the site from many nearby locations. The cemetery does not offer funeral or burial services.
