ʻAkaka Falls State Park sits about 11 miles north of Hilo, above the village of Honomū. A 0.4-mile paved loop with some steps winds through lush tropical plants to viewpoints over Kahūnā Falls and ʻAkaka Falls, which drops 442 feet into a stream-cut gorge; turn left at the first junction for the shortest walk to ʻAkaka. Non-residents pay $5 per person plus $10 per car, by credit card only, and the park suggests paying before you arrive because cell service is weak. Part of the trail is closed for now because of fallen trees.
