Bluestone State Park opened in 1950 where the Bluestone River meets the New River, just upstream from the dam that made 2,040-acre Bluestone Lake, the third-largest body of water in West Virginia. The marina rents fishing boats, pontoons, kayaks and canoes, and anglers come for bass, catfish, crappie and bluegill. More than eight miles of hiking trails climb the rugged hillsides. You can sleep in one of 26 cabins or at four campgrounds, one of them reached only by boat. Pipestem Resort State Park, with golf and bike rentals, is nearby.
