Canoe-Picnic Point is a 70-acre state park on Grindstone Island in the St. Lawrence River, reachable only by boat. New York bought it in 1897 as one of the first parks of the St. Lawrence Reservation, and Canoe Point is named for the American Canoe Association, which once held its yearly meetings here. Boaters can tie up at the docks for $19 a night, pitch a tent for $23 or rent a cabin by the week, and there are picnic pavilions, a nature trail and fishing. Plan the crossing from the Clayton area and check the weather on the river first.
