About Chieftains Museum

Chieftains Museum, also called the Major Ridge Home, occupies a house once owned by Major Ridge, a Cherokee leader active in the early 1800s. The house is a National Historic Landmark and one of few privately run sites certified by the National Park Service as part of the Trail of Tears. Visitors can tour the house, which holds permanent and traveling exhibits, and walk the grounds on about six acres along the Oostanaula River. The property includes a demonstration garden, a Three Sisters garden, outdoor interpretive signs, and a connection to Rome's Riverwalk. The museum's mission centers on the Ridge family's life and the history of the Cherokee people during that century.
