About New Echota State Historic Site

New Echota became the capital of the Cherokee Nation in 1825, and the forced removal on the Trail of Tears officially began here in 1838. The site has 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including the Council House, the court house, the print shop of the Cherokee Phoenix newspaper and missionary Samuel Worcester's home. Start in the visitor center with its exhibits and a 17-minute film. A 1.5-mile nature trail leads to New Town Creek. Adults pay $8.
