Crispus Attucks Park

A hidden 1.06 acre community park in Bloomingdale, built by neighbors on former alley land.

Washington, DC

About Crispus Attucks Park

Known informally as the Cave Yard or the Secret Park, this small green space sits in an alley complex behind rowhouses in the Bloomingdale neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Roughly forty years ago the site held a burned building and abandoned cars, but residents came together to turn it into a leafy retreat of flowers, trees and grass. The park honors Crispus Attucks, an African American former slave and the first person to die in the Boston Massacre. It is owned and managed by the Crispus Attucks Development Corporation, a nonprofit community development organization, and relies on donations, grants and neighborhood support. The park hosts events such as a free annual fall festival and an end-of-summer movie series.
