About African American Civil War Memorial

The memorial recognizes the roughly 200,000 Black men who served in the Union Army and Navy. Their service is credited with helping bring the war to an end and with freeing millions of enslaved people. The site includes a memorial sculpture and a wall listing the names of servicemen. A nearby museum in the U Street area, housed in the historic Grimke School, adds indoor exhibits about the United States Colored Troops. The bronze statue The Spirit of Freedom stands nine feet tall.
