About Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site

This National Park Service site in southeastern Berks County preserves a rural iron plantation that operated from 1771 to 1883. Its core was a charcoal-fueled iron furnace, and the site includes restored buildings such as the furnace group, an ironmaster's house, a company store, a blacksmith's shop, a barn, and workers' homes. Visitors can learn how the furnace operated and how the surrounding community lived and worked. The park covers 848 acres, and the furnace produced stoves in large numbers during the early 1800s.
