Jay Cooke State Park covers about 8,900 acres along the St. Louis River, three miles east of Carlton and a short drive from Duluth. If you only have an hour, park at the historic River Inn and walk the swinging bridge that sways above the tilted slate riverbed; the route is accessible to all. About 50 miles of hiking trails lead through hardwood forest, and Oldenburg Point has Civilian Conservation Corps buildings and views over the valley. In winter the park grooms ski trails and rents snowshoes. A one-day vehicle permit costs $7.
