This National Park Service site tells the story of the Johnstown Flood of May 31, 1889, when the South Fork Dam broke and its lake rushed 14 miles down the Little Conemaugh valley. The flood killed 2,209 people. The visitor center has two floors of exhibits and shows the park film "Black Friday," and trails lead to the dam's remaining abutments. The club house of the wealthy fishing club that owned the dam still stands in nearby St. Michael. Entry is free.
