The museum sits in the Tremé neighborhood, one of the oldest surviving Black communities in the United States. It aims to preserve, interpret, and promote the contributions of people of African descent to New Orleans and Louisiana culture, from the era of slavery through emancipation, Reconstruction, and the present day. Its current exhibitions include The Katrina List and Ancestral Odyssey. The museum is presently operating from its administrative building, called The Blue House, while its historic grounds are being restored.
