Stanford University

295 Galvez St · Stanford, CA

Why you should go…

Founded in 1885 by Leland and Jane Stanford in memory of their only child, Stanford spreads over 8,180 acres and welcomes self-guided visits. Start at the Visitor Center on Galvez Street for a map or a guided tour, then head to the Main Quad, where Memorial Church and Rodin sculptures sit among Richardson Romanesque arcades. Hoover Tower, completed in 1941, has a 14th-floor observation platform over campus and the Bay Area. The Arizona Cactus Garden and the 3.5-mile Dish trail are also open to visitors.

Good to know

General sightseeing guidance

Habits that pay off across this whole category, not rules for this one venue. Always check the official site for the specifics.

  • The forecast is part of the ticket

Haze, low cloud, and rain flatten a view. Clear-day visits are worth rearranging your plans for.

  • Golden hour sells out first

Sunset slots at observation decks and cruises are the first to go, so book those further ahead.

  • Dress a layer warmer

It is always breezier up high and out on the water than it feels at street level.

  • Timed entry is common

Plenty of landmarks release tickets in windows rather than at the door, so check before you walk over.
