Sun Valley Lodge opened on December 21, 1936, at the resort Union Pacific chairman W. Averell Harriman built, and the world's first chairlifts went up on Proctor and Dollar mountains that fall. Skiing is on Bald Mountain, with a 3,400-foot vertical drop, and the gentler Dollar Mountain. In summer you can golf on three courses, hike, bike and ride horses, and winter adds an outdoor ice rink and horse-drawn sleigh rides.
