Wooded Georgia state park near Atlanta with Civil War-era mill ruins, rocky rapids, and a reservoir for fishing and paddling.

Set in the Douglas County countryside, this state park offers quiet forest and creekside scenery within easy driving distance of Atlanta. Visitors can walk to the remains of a nineteenth-century textile mill that was destroyed during the Civil War, then climb rocky bluffs for views over the rushing water below. Other trails pass through fields and woods filled with ferns, magnolias, azaleas, and hardwood trees. The 215-acre George Sparks Reservoir draws anglers and people who like to feed ducks or have a picnic, though swimming is prohibited there. Rental boats are offered during warmer months, and an award-winning Visitor Center covers local history and wildlife. Rangers lead guided hikes through the year, and the mill interior is restricted to guided groups to protect the ruins.
