Congress named this Newport News museum, founded in 1930, America's National Maritime Museum. Its USS Monitor Center shows the turret, engine and other pieces raised from the Civil War ironclad, beside a full-scale replica. Other galleries hold ship models, carved figureheads, scrimshaw and the yacht that won the 2013 America's Cup. Outside, the free Noland Trail loops five miles around the 167-acre Mariners' Lake with 14 bridges. Museum admission is $1 a person, and parking is free.
