See Bronzeville's granite and bronze memorial to the Eighth Illinois, the Black regiment that fought in France in World War I.
E 35th St and S Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dr, Chicago, IL 60616 · Chicago, IL
This granite shaft at 35th Street and King Drive honors the Eighth Regiment of the Illinois National Guard, an African-American unit that fought in France as the 370th U.S. Infantry. Bronze panels by Leonard Crunelle show a mother, Columbia and a soldier, and a bronze plaque lists 137 men of the regiment who died in the war. The doughboy on top was added in 1936. It stands in the Black Metropolis-Bronzeville district and hosts a Memorial Day ceremony each year. It stands outdoors at the intersection, so you can stop by any time.
