Winterville Mounds is a 42-acre site north of Greenville where Native Americans built earthen mounds and plazas from about AD 1000 to 1450. Twelve of the original 23 mounds and two large plazas survive. Mound A, the 55-foot Temple Mound, is among the ten tallest earthen structures in the United States, and its ramp was rebuilt in a restoration finished in October 2024. The site is a National Historic Landmark run by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. The grounds are free and open daily from dawn to dusk. Visitors are asked not to walk on the mounds.
