Run by the Department of Veterans Affairs, this national cemetery sits in Chemung County beside Woodlawn City Cemetery. Its history centers on a nearby Civil War prison camp that held Confederate enlisted men in 1864 and 1865, and many of those prisoners died there and were buried on these grounds. Visitors can see the Shohola Monument, which honors both Confederate prisoners and Union guards killed in a 1864 train wreck, along with a 1937 Confederate memorial and a 1988 county veterans plaque. The cemetery was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. Visitation is allowed daily from sunrise to sunset, and a gravesite locator is available at the office.
