Why You Should Go...

Calling all history enthusiasts. Find historic fun at the Old Barracks, located in the Capitol Complex in downtown Trenton.

The Old Barracks was built in 1758 as winter housing for British troops during the French and Indian War. During the American Revolution, it was heavily used by many troops on both sides of the fighting. The building stood just one block from the Battle of Trenton's site, and George Washington turned the building into a military hospital specializing in smallpox treatment.

Today, the Old Barracks Museum offers guided tours of this unique National Historic Landmark.

Please plan to spend about two hours at the museum to see all they have to offer.

Insider Info

Guided tours last 45 minutes and are led by engaging and entertaining historic interpreters.

Subject to availability, free parking is available in the Capitol Complex parking garage. Street parking and paid garages are also available nearby.

Fun Facts

George Washington probably did not sleep here, but he did, however, turn the building into a military hospital in 1777.

At the time it was built in 1758, the barracks was the second largest building in New Jersey - only Nassau Hall in Princeton was larger.

Four other barracks were built in New Jersey in 1758 for the same purpose, but the Trenton barracks is the only one still standing.
