Phillips Academy opened the Addison in 1931 to collect American art, and it is free and open to the public in its own building on the school's campus. The founding collection had works by Copley, Eakins, Winslow Homer, Sargent and Whistler, and later gifts added Calder, Hopper, O'Keeffe, Pollock and Kara Walker. It also holds more than 16,000 photographs, from Muybridge to Walker Evans. Parking is free, and the museum is about a 30-minute drive from Boston. It closes on Mondays and every year from August 1 to early September.
