Angel Mounds sits on the Ohio River banks southeast of Evansville and preserves the remains of a large town that flourished around 1250 A.D. The site is managed by the Indiana State Museum and Historic Sites and remains sacred to today's tribal nations. Visitors can walk among earthen mounds that once raised important buildings above a dense community, and an interpretive center offers modern perspectives on the place. The mounds are aligned to observe solar events such as the summer solstice sunrise and winter solstice sunset. Archaeological work here in the late 1930s and 1940s was influential in North American archaeology.
