About Art Museum of the University of Memphis

The Art Museum of the University of Memphis opened in 1981 as the University Gallery and took its current name in 1994. Its Egyptian collection, begun with 44 objects bought from Boston's Museum of Fine Arts in 1975, is the largest of its kind in the South. The Windows on Africa galleries show traditional African art in five themes, and temporary shows of contemporary art and craft rotate through the main gallery. Admission is always free, and the Central lot is free on Saturdays.
