Battle Monument Square, N. Calvert Street between E. Fayette and E. Lexington Streets, Baltimore, MD · Baltimore, MD
The Battle Monument stands in the middle of North Calvert Street between Baltimore's two circuit courthouses and honors those who died defending the city in September 1814, during the War of 1812. Built from 1815 to 1825 to a design by Maximilian Godefroy, it rises 39 feet from an Egyptian-style base with griffins at each corner, and the cords of its fasces column list the names of the dead regardless of rank. The figure on top is a concrete copy; the original marble Lady Baltimore moved to the Maryland Historical Society in 2013. The monument appears on the city seal and flag.
