About Washington Monument at Mount Vernon Place

Baltimore's Washington Monument is a 178-foot marble column designed by Robert Mills, begun in 1815 and finished in 1829, years before the one in the capital. A statue of George Washington resigning his commission stands on top. The gallery at the base is free and tells the story of the monument and the squares around it. The climb to the lookout is 227 steps in groups of up to five every 20 minutes; there are no restrooms and no air conditioning, so bring water.
