Industrialist Charles Deering spent his last winters, from 1922 to 1927, on this 444-acre bayfront estate in the old town of Cutler. Two historic houses are open as museums: the Richmond Cottage, a wooden home that became a 22-room hotel in 1900, and Deering's Mediterranean-style Stone House, finished in 1922 with 18-inch concrete walls. The grounds hold eight ecosystems, including what is thought to be the largest virgin coastal tropical hardwood hammock in the continental United States, and more than 170 bird species have been recorded. The county runs nature walks, kayak trips and ghost tours here.
