About Charles Young Buffalo Soldiers National Monument

Charles Young bought this house in Wilberforce, which he called Youngsholm, in 1907. Young rose from the Buffalo Soldiers to become the first African American colonel in the US Army and was later promoted to brigadier general after his death. The National Park Service runs the house, which opens for tours by appointment; the grounds and historical markers can be seen any time. Entry is free, and the site is less than a mile west of Wilberforce and Central State universities.
