The Columbia Gorge Hotel opened in 1921, built by lumber baron Simon Benson at the end of the Columbia River Scenic Highway, and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. Guests stay in about 40 rooms perched above the river, walk seven acres of landscaped Pacific Northwest gardens, and can hear Wah Gwin Gwin Falls from the riverside rooms. Simon's Cliffhouse restaurant, a piano bar and a full-service spa are on site. The hotel is open year-round and sits about 45 minutes from both Portland and Mt. Hood.
