Crystal Grottoes is the only show cave in Maryland, on Route 34 between Boonsboro and Antietam National Battlefield. A road crew found it in 1920 while quarrying for gravel, and it opened to visitors in 1922. Guided tours of about 40 minutes leave every half hour and pass stalactites, flowstone, columns and draperies, including a section tinted light red by iron oxide. Adult tickets are $23 and children 5 to 12 pay $13, sold first come, first served. A gem mill on site lets kids sift for stones.
