The 1897 Thomas Jefferson Building is a Gilded Age stunner: mosaics, murals, and marble staircases fill the Great Hall, and an overlook peers into the domed Main Reading Room where researchers work beneath 160 feet of coffered ceiling. Displays include a Gutenberg Bible and Thomas Jefferson's personal library. Entry is free but requires a timed pass, reserve online up to 30 days out, with same-day passes released at 9 a.m. Open Tuesday through Saturday.
