Cumberland Mountain State Park covers 1,720 acres on the Cumberland Plateau just south of Crossville. It grew out of a New Deal homestead project, and the Civilian Conservation Corps built its Byrd Creek Dam from local Crab Orchard stone between 1935 and 1938; at 319 feet long, it is the largest masonry project the CCC ever completed. Today you can hike trails, walk the paved Byrd Lake Trail, eat at the lakeside restaurant, rent a cabin or camp, and play the Jack Nicklaus-designed Bear Trace golf course. Byrd Creek can flood quickly after heavy rain.
