The museum is a nonprofit run by a board of directors and was founded in 2005 to preserve Destin's history. Its displays trace early settler life from the 1830s and the evolution of local fishing, from seine boats to the vessels seen in Destin Harbor today. Highlights include a wall of more than 100 fish mounts, a three-dimensional reef tank, and an exhibit on the Destin Fishing Rodeo, one of the longest-running fishing tournaments in the country. The building sits near the foot of the Destin Bridge, just off U.S. Highway 98.
