The Oppenheimer Bird Observatory is an observation deck at the corner of Settegast and Stewart Roads inside Artist Boat's Coastal Heritage Preserve, roughly 900 acres of protected coastal prairie on Galveston Island's west end. Designed and built with the Gulf Coast Design Lab at the University of Texas at Austin, the long walkway has a polycarbonate wall on the road side for shade and a slatted wooden wall on the pond side so visitors can watch birds without disturbing them. Birders come for shorebirds and waders such as plovers, whimbrels and curlews, and sandhill cranes in season. Open daily from dawn to dusk with an ADA parking pull-off and signage.
