Flandrau State Park sits in the Cottonwood River valley at the edge of New Ulm, with valley walls rising 150 to 200 feet. Crews from the CCC and WPA put up its stone buildings in the 1930s in a style that nods to the town's German heritage, and the barracks later held German prisoners of war. Today there is a sand-bottom swimming pond, overlooks, the Hiking Club Trail and winter trails. You need a vehicle permit, $7 for one day.
