Lake Shetek State Park sits on the largest lake in southwestern Minnesota, the headwaters of the Des Moines River; Shetek is the Ojibwe word for pelican. A causeway leads to 45-acre Loon Island and its one-mile interpretive trail, and an observation deck at Eastlick Marsh has a spotting scope for watching grebes, herons and pelicans. The park has a swimming beach, fishing pier, boat and canoe rentals, campgrounds, and the Koch Cabin and a monument to 15 settlers killed in the Dakota War of 1862. A one-day vehicle permit costs $7.
