About Fort Gibson National Cemetery

Fort Gibson National Cemetery sits about a mile and a half northeast of the town of Fort Gibson in Muskogee County. It grew out of the army post established in 1824 to keep peace among tribal nations along the western frontier. The grounds hold veterans from nearly every American war, along with Native American scouts, civilians, and family members. Notable burials include two Medal of Honor recipients and Talahina Rogers Houston, the second wife of Sam Houston, who was reinterred here in 1904. The cemetery is also known for the legend of Vivia Thomas, a woman buried in the officers' circle. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1999 and remains an active burial ground.
