This state historic site on the southeastern edge of Fort Totten preserves a military post founded in 1867. Its brick buildings replaced an earlier log fort, and several original structures now house museum exhibits. After the army left in 1890, the post became a federal boarding school for Native American youth, and from 1935 to 1939 it operated as a tuberculosis preventorium for Dakota children. The school was later handed to the Spirit Lake tribal government, and the state received the property in 1959.
