Haleakalā National Park covers 33,265 acres of Maui, from a 10,023-foot summit down to the coast at Kīpahulu. In the Summit District you look into a crater nearly 7 miles across and 2,600 feet deep, home to nēnē geese and the Haleakalā silversword, a plant that grows only on these slopes. Sunrise visits need a vehicle reservation made in advance. The two districts are not connected by road, and there are no gas stations inside the park.
