Walk around a flooded granite quarry to the rocky tip of Cape Ann, where you can scramble on ledges and look into tide pools.
Gott Avenue, Rockport, MA · Rockport, MA
Halibut Point is the old Babson Farm granite quarry at the northern tip of Cape Ann, now a state park beside a Trustees of Reservations property. Granite cut here built streets, bridges and buildings such as Boston's Custom House Tower until the industry collapsed in 1929. About 2.5 miles of trails lead around the water-filled quarry and down to ledges with tide pools holding snails, hermit crabs and sea stars. A World War II fire control tower holds a small museum on quarrying. Swimming in the quarry is not allowed.
