Located on the Commonwealth Avenue Mall in Back Bay, this memorial recalls nine Boston firefighters who died when a fire-damaged hotel partly collapsed in 1972. The sculpture was made by Theodore Clausen with landscape architect Peter White. It takes the form of a curved granite arc with a bronze helmet and coat laid across it. The memorial was dedicated in 1997, on the 25th anniversary of the disaster. The former Hotel Vendome stands diagonally across the street from the monument, near Dartmouth Street.
